GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener Garden centers are getting rid of trees, shrubs, and perennials at reduced prices. There is time for roots to establish before frost. Do not buy plants that are exceedingly rootbound.

Dig and divide irises now. Cut leaves in a fan shape to about six inches. Dig rhizomes and remove old or damaged rhizomes. Plant the healthy rhizomes five inches apart just below the soil surface.

Add a wetting agent to liquid herbicide mixtures. It provides better coverage and breaks down the surface tension of the water. This product is found in the ag section of a farm-type store. It works on clover and violets if they are taking over your area.
