RICHARD BOEHNKE

Richard Boehnke, the son of Fred and Irene (Dierks) Boehnke, was born on February 10, 1949 in Worthington, MN. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Fulda and graduated from the Fulda High School in 1967. Rich then entered the National Guard and served for 5 years. He remained on the family farm where he farmed with his family. Rich was united in marriage to Sherri Clark on February 9, 1974 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Sherburn, MN.

CHARLES “CHUBBY” G. JOHNSON

Charles Johnson, age 86 of Westbrook, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Westbrook Good Samaritan. Charles “Chubby” Gary Johnson was born September 11, 1935 to Henry and Myrtle (Hanson) Johnson in Slayton, Minnesota.

ART BUSCHENA

Art Buschena, the son of John and Frieda (Duerr) Buschena, was born on June 11, 1925 in Fulda, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda. He grew up in Fulda and attended school, graduating from the Fulda High School in 1943. Art served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 as an Electrician’s Mate, second class. He then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, graduating with an electrician’s degree. He returned to Fulda and worked with his father at Buschena Electric in downtown Fulda; in 1962 he passed the test to receive his Master Electrician’s license. He later took over the business.

MAVIS J. HINTERMEISTER

Mavis Jean Hintermeister was born to Simon and Irene (Harman) VanderLee on December 16, 1933 in Boyden, Iowa. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Lake Wilson, Minnesota where she attended five years of country school, usually walking the 3 miles, sometimes riding her horse, Patsy. In those years she majored in tree climbing, as well as silos and windmills. She graduated in 1951 from Lake Wilson High School. On November 15, 1952, she was married to James Hintermeister at her parent’s farm near Lake Wilson. Following their marriage, they moved to Slayton, Minnesota for a short time. In November of 1954, with Jan about a year old, they moved to a farm outside of Avoca, Minnesota, a move that many years later she would call, the Dreadful Move. They moved off the farm in February, 1961 when they moved into Slayton and a nomadic life where they spent 3½ years in four different rental homes, moving permanently to Pipestone in 1964 where Mavis lived the rest of her life. Mavis worked various part-time jobs while raising her children. Those jobs included work with Dr. Pierson at the medical clinic as a receptionist and cleaning the autoclave at night, and working down the street in the Sale Barn office on Thursdays while in Slayton. In the Pipestone years, Mavis spent time at Shirlee’s Boutique where she worked with customers, but also did some custom sewing. In her middle years, she tinkered with some night classes in healthcare and watched patients on overnights; and she also worked in Russell Tobias’ Chiropractic Office. On January 24, 2022, Mavis was admitted to the Pipestone County Medical Center. She died there on Friday, January 28, 2022 at the age of 88 years, one month and 12 days.

MAVIS HINTERMEISTER

Mavis Hintermeister, age 88, of Pipestone, Minnesota, died peacefully on Friday, January 28, 2022 at the Pipestone County Medical Center in Pipestone. Visitation was held on Thursday, February 3, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Faith Community Church in Pipestone. A private family funeral service was held at Faith Community Church. Burial was in the Old Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone. Arrangements were entrusted to the Hartquist Funeral Home – Pipestone Chapel.

DEAN E. PEARSON

Dean Edwin Pearson was born on June 13, 1940, in Tyler, Minnesota to Nels and Vivian Swenson Pearson. He was Baptized and Confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Sillerud Lutheran Church in rural Balaton, MN. Dean grew up on the family farm near Hadley, MN and graduated from Slayton High School in 1958. Dean then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD graduating with a Agriculture Degree. Dean Joined the Minnesota Army National Guard in September 1963 and served until his honorable discharge in September 1969.

HEDWIG “HEDY” L. SCHMITKE

On July 19th, 1933, in the town of Fulda Germany a sprightly little red head was born to Martha and August Karl Eltese and that began the adventure of Hedwig Luzie Elteste. Her idealic childhood was interrupted by World War II when Hedy, age 11, lost her mother and four siblings (ranging from age 17-1 ½) in a bomb shelter on December 26. Her oldest brother, Stephane, age 19, also died in the war as a soldier. But her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, had greater plans for her. He guided her through a new stepfamily when her father, who survived the war, remarried. Hedy continued to grow into a strong, kind, independent woman behind the Iron Curtain.

LINDA ROE

Linda Roe, 66, was surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, when she passed away peacefully at Ava’s House after a courageous battle with cancer. Linda was born on December 17, 1955, in Pipestone, MN to Edwin and Marjorie Reitsma.

KARI A. DILLON

A memorial service for Kari Anna Dillon (Mackey), 55, of Canton, will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at First Baptist Church in Canton with Pastor Mike Roberson officiating. A private family inurnment will be in Haven of Memories.

KATHLEEN M. BYRNE

Kathleen Byrne, the daughter of William and Patricia (Schimek) Pattinson, was born on March 21, 1952 in Slayton, MN. She grew up in Currie and attended IHM Catholic School in Currie. Kathy was united in marriage to Tom Byrne on August 26, 1969 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Currie. After their marriage they lived in Norfolk, VA and Long Beach, CA while Tom was in the Navy. In December of 1970 they moved to Walnut Grove, MN and in 1980 they moved to the Byrne family farm east of Currie. She worked for many years as secretary for Sweetman Sand and Gravel. Kathy passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022 at the Our House Hospice Home in Slayton, MN at the age of 69 with the comfort of her family by her side. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Currie. Kathy was a devoted wife and mother and took pride in raising her two boys and later enjoying her grandkids and the activities and all their lifetime milestones. She enjoyed driving through the state park, hanging with “Red”, christmas lights and sitting in the sun on the deck. But her #1 love was her grandkids, as you could tell by the sparkle in her eyes when they were mentioned.
