Murray County Central High School has been working with the Midland Institute for Entrepreneurship and Marshall Public Schools to bring the CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities) program to our district. The CEO program’s purpose is to connect high school students with local businesses in their communities. The idea behind it is that by exposing our students to the many businesses in our community they will gain a better understanding of what opportunities exist. They will also learn how different businesses operate, what services those businesses provide, and what to consider as they build their own business plans. This program provides students with the time to walk through creating a business plan and the ability to implement that plan by starting their own business. An undergirding philosophy of this program is to keep local talent in the community- a “grow your own” approach so to speak. Ultimately CEO is a course designed to utilize partnerships that help students develop an understanding of business development and processes.

A group of individuals answered the call this past weekend and rescued a juvenile trumpeter swan in Lake Wilson. Thank you to Katie Chapman, Karen and Mark Hurd, Travis DeLong, Bill Johlfes, Michele Steffl and Dave and Linda Johnson.

Trent and Nichy Johnson will be honored as outstanding conservationists at a Dec. 14 luncheon at the annual convention of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) in Bloomington, Minn.

The Murray County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on November 16, 2001. Chair Dennis Walgraven, Commissioners Dave Thiner, Lori Gunnink and Molly Malone were present for the meeting. Auditor Treasurer Heidi Winter presented the list of warrants to be paid in the total amount of $136,212.43. Winter along with Ditch Inspector Travis Radke presented information for discussion regarding levies to be placed on properties receiving the benefits of the drainage systems. The spreadsheet contained eighteen columns of information with the beginning balances for each system and the expected year end balance after payments are made. Redetermination of benefits is currently being evaluated with an increase in the number of properties connected to some of the systems expected. Levies are placed on the properties to cover the costs of repairs completed or to be undertaken in the next year. A public hearing is scheduled for November 30 at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the levies and the reasons for any levy changes with the landowners.

The MCMC Board held a special meeting for the CO- VID Vaccination Mandate for MCMC that needs to be in place by January 4th, 2022. They held informational meetings with staff last week that were well attended reported Luke Schryvers, MCMC CEO. The hospital receives funds through MEDICARE AND MEDICAD which requires them to have a policy for the mandate in place. There are three parts to this: They must have a policy for the mandate, a process in place for exemptions (medical and/or religious) and a process to track vaccine rates. He stressed this is a personal individual decision that needs to be made by each staff member.

Have you ever thought about kindness and what it means to you? Is it holding the door open for someone, complimenting someone’s outfit or hair style or bringing donuts for your co-workers? I did a basic google search of kindness out of curiosity of what would come up. One of the question prompts said, is kindness a choice? The answer was as follows: how we treat others should be a choice that reflects our character not a reaction to other people’s character.

Slayton City Council met on Monday, November 15th. The meeting was called to order, agenda approved, minutes from the October 14th and November 1st were reviewed and the claims were approved for the month.
