The Slayton Kiwanis Club has been the sponsoring organization of Scouting in Slayton since the 1950’s. Scouting continues to make an increasingly strong impact on the lives of young people across the country, and right here in Murray County. Scouts is a program for all youth, helping to ensure kids of all backgrounds realize their own abilities and strengths. To ensure that Scouting continues to be a strong program in our community, we are proud to assist with the Friends of Scouting fundraising effort of the Sioux Council. During the next few weeks, Slayton Kiwanis members will be visiting individuals, local businesses and service organizations to ask them to support this worthy cause. As the President of Kiwanis, I would like to ask you to help.

By Joanne Bergman The Murray County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, March 07, 2023. Commissioner Jackie Meier was not present for this meeting. County Auditor Treasurer Heidi Winter was given approval to engage the State Auditor for the 2022 audit. The cost is above that of an auditing firm with the benefit coming with meeting all of the State’s standards for the audit.

A SUMMARY OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE MURRAY COUNTY BOARD February 28, 2023 8:30 a.m. Pursuant to notice, the Murray County Board of Commissioners convened with the following members present in person: Commissioners; Malone, Gunnink, Meier, Welgraven and Thiner. Also present in person, Emily Ackerman, Carolyn McDonald. Commissioners MSP to approve the agenda without additions. MSP to approve the minutes from the February 21, 2023, meeting. MSP to accept a $1,000 donation from The Murray County Historical Society to be used to offset costs for a feasibility study for the current historical museum building (receipt code 01-503-503-5760). MSP to set the bid opening for project SP 051-070-005 on April 4, 2023 at 9:00 AM MSP to approve the easement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a Wildlife Habitat Protection for the property T 108 N., R 40 W., Section 28 Part of the S ½ of the SE ¼, determined by a survey. MSP to approve the grand prize of 4 hours of paid time to the winner of March Madness.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can begin applying for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) General signup starting February 27 through April 7, 2023. CRP is a cornerstone voluntary conservation program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and a key tool in the Biden-Harris administration’s effort to address climate change and help agricultural communities invest in the longterm well-being of their land and natural resources.

USDA Rural Development is accepting applications for very lowand low-income individuals and families seeking to purchase or repair a home in a rural area. The Direct Home Loan program offers financing to qualified very-low and low-income applicants that are unable to qualify for traditional financing.

Monogram Foods’ Monogram Loves Kids Foundation will award $60,000 to charitable organizations that sponsor programs benefiting children and their families in the Chandler community. Local 501(c)3 organizations within 100 miles of our plant at 521 N 5th Street, Chandler, MN 56122 are now invited to complete an application by visiting our website: https://monogramfoods.com/ what-we-value/community-outreach/ Through the annual grants program, Monogram Foods Loves Kids will donate more than $650,000 total to charitable organizations in the communities in which Monogram Foods (Monogram) has production facilities. A committee of Monogram team members in each city will select recipients of the grants ranging from $500 to $10,000.

The following students graduated after the summer and fall 2022 semesters at South Dakota State University. Nearly 1,000 students completed all requirements for a degree and/or certificate program, and those requirements have been verified by the appropriate college.

Students honored for academic success during the 2022 fall semester The following students have been named to the 2022 fall semester Dean’s List at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, the university announced today.

Murray County 4-H was awarded a Monogram Foods Loves Kids Foundation Grant to host multi-generational community events. The last Community Night event was hosted this last Friday night at the Murray County 4-H Building.
